Unlike the other services, when you are a musician in the Navy, you are truly a musician and nothing else. It's kind of a good life. You might consider holding off on joining, going to school and studying music hard, and then enlisting in the Navy as a musician. Depending on your background and how well you take tests, you might someday be elligible for their "LDO" or "Limited Duty Officer" program to be a Navy band officer.
Most folks in the Navy band program have at least SOME college music experience...most have degrees or a lot of advanced study. A lot of folks audition for their bands, thus they can be picky.
So, my thought? Go to school, major in music, then examine possibilities in the Navy music program. You'll very possibly love it.

You have several options on your radar. One, you can join the Navy and continue on with your medical quest. Two, you can join the Navy and continue in school with your music.
The big plus with the Navy is that they have many schools and all kinds of training. The negative part is, as a Medic, unless your an officer and are a nurse or MD, you could end up with the Marines playing in the mud or rain. Also, when doing your sea time, you will be away from your home port for a long time, but be able to see the world at other ports of call.
All branches of the service offer good schools and programs that will help you reach your goals. I am just pro Navy as I attended their schools and used the GI bill when I got out to help me in the real world.

The Navy was fun for me... I had a great time! I was a jet engine mechanic and, (oddly enough), I never saw duty on a ship... always got stationed on land bases... Guantanamo Bay, Cuba being my last, (it's a 47 square mile base) - what a blast!
Anyway, if you decide to stay in school though, you can go in as an officer, rather than as an enlisted person - (if that matters?). I was enlisted; went in right after high school.
The only hard part of the Navy was boot camp, and even THAT wasn't hard, (more like a modified boyscout camp!). Or, if you decide to go in now, afterwards, you can go back to school under the G.I. bill, (They'll pay for it, or at least most of it!).
Towards the end of bootcamp, you'll be given tests that will give you a grade, and based upon that grade, you'll have a list of job options that will be available to you to choose from. Then you'll fill out a form stating your first through third choices. I got my first choice and went on to "A" school, (in Memphis, Tennessee), right out of boot camp!
So... there ya go! You decide!

The navy was fun for me I was there for 6 yrs. Like in anything else there are good and bad things. But I found that the good outweighed the bad. I finished my degree thanks to the navy I have no student loans and still have my whole GI Bill. If you come into the Navy tell them you want to be a musician. Make sure that is your billet and that is what you get at Meps. That way you will have all the time in the world to go to college at the same time that you are serving. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I was in the NAVY for 5 years. LOVED it. Some of the best time in my life. I was on a Destroyer. You usually work a 6-8 hour day. Of course the lower the rank, the more work you do. After 1 year you will probably be high enough that life will be great. I saw the world. They paid for my bachelors degree and masters. I would recommend anyone to join. USS RAMAGE DDG-61

Medicine is a highly sought after profession and you will always have a job. Music is an art and employment is iffy at best.
I would go into the Navy, become a Hospital Corpsman, take advantage of the training and college tuition plans and get a degree in medicine. That is the advice I gave my daughter and she did that and then got her degree in Nursing and has had a great career with high pay and constant advancement

The navy could open up many areas to you. Join and have a good secure job while training even if it on your own time then get out and join the music field.

Serve your country be my hero! I was a Navy Dental Tech/Corpsman for 5 years. Enjoyed it. While you are in you can sign up for The Montgomery G.I. Bill (MGIB): Have money for Music School when you get out. I heard you can also take college courses while deployed at sea now. Good Luck!

Music. Music. Music. Admittedly, I am not an officer so I don't know if it any different, but I am in the Navy and I'll tell you right now: it sucks ***. It's day in and day out of pointless bullsh*t bureaucracy and posturing. The Navy is all about appearance and not even vaguely about substance. The man willing to stab his buddy in the back to look good to his superiors is the one that gets ahead. I'm getting out ASAP.
