I've heard of "kitty show," which has bugs & bird DVD's that cats are supposed to like watching--has anyone tried it to see if it works?
Kitty has to be kept indoors per my lease, does anyone have any other suggestions? She's licked a bald spot on one of her arms, and I'm trying to think of things that can keep her occupied during my finals, when I won't be able to play with her much.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say the Yahoo answers cat folks have always been wonderful--this is at least my 3rd question, and you guys ALWAYS help me out. Thank you! Kitty says "thank you, " too __^..^__

When I got my first cat, I knew I would not always be there for him, so I immedietely got another cat to keep the first company. Both were young and got accustomed to each other quite quickly. Now my cat has a constant companion when I am not around. If your lease will permit another cat, that is what I would suggest. Barring that, any TV program would work. It is sound and changing picture to entertain the cat, and if it doesn't want to be entertained, it will find another place in the house to hide. They are also content to watch the goings on outside from a windowsill. And don't forget--lots of toys and keep water available and litterbox clean.

I seem top remember hearing somewhere that many cats can't actually see the images on a TV because they see too well (they perceive the minute gaps that a digital signal leaves out, which our eyes skip over). The best company for your kitty is really going to be another cat, providing that you have the space for it. Two cats aren't a whole lot more expensive than one. Just be sure to introduce the "new guy" at a time when you are free to spend lots of time at home to keep an eye on things as everybody adjusts to the new situation (there's lots of good advice out there on introducing a new pet to an existing cat). Good luck--with the kitties and the school

You know, once upon a time I would have thought this was stupid, but that was before our latest addition to the family. First cat I ever had that watches TV. She goes bonkers over Funniest Pets on Animal Planet channel, will sit there mesmerized and stare at the TV. I think its hearing the meowing and barking that gets her attention, but she really loves it. She bats at the tv the entire time its on. Another thing you could try is getting one of those round things with the ball in it. I don't know what its called, but the cat can see the ball and swat it, which makes it go around faster. It seems to entertain them.

Then again, you could just get her a playmate!

My wife found this toy on for Christmas last year. It's a small hutch kind of thing with a scratch pad on top and a noisy ball hanging inside. The cat's still playing with it.

Catnip toys are good (if your cat isn't immune to it)

Scrunchy balls made of foil are always a hit.

But don't feel guilty about it. Cats are a little independent anyway, and you may find she'll play a while and then come curl up in your lap. Cats are amazingly empathetic creatures, They sense when your feeling bad, when you are feeling up, and respond to that. I often read (you know, those book things they had before the internet) and the cat will hop up and lay down in my lap and go to sleep. It helps me relax and take in the book.

I'm worried I'll have this problem too. I'm starting grad school in August and want to get a kitten for when I can have pets in my apt. I'll probably get one in June so we can spend some time together before I start!

Getting another cat might keep yours entertained, so I've heard. But If you can't afford it, don't do it.

And the cat folks on here ARE awesome and always give the best advice.

Firstly, if you have a computer, try to buy one of those computer games that cats are interested in playing. A simpler thought would be to buy toys for cats and a comfort bed so that she won't feel that lonely. Your thought is not bad but, a DVD won't last forever. You just have to know that having a pet is a big responsibility and there is nothing else that will make your cat happier than to be with you.

Good Luck,
Elias

Personally my kitty likes anything on tv--lights, movement, sound--it's got it all! Animal planet and nickelodeon are his favs, oddly enough! I also have a panic mouse that when I come home I turn on and plop on the floor--keeps him occupied while I microwave dinner and such. I have a wooden box full of holes (I've also seen them made out of cardboard) that I stuff with toys and he has to dig them out, I refill it every morning and every night they're all over the floor again. ;-) I think you can get them online at petsmart.com or petco.com, I got mine at the local Goodwill--it's a $30 toy... Hope it helps and good luck on finals!

It might help, but cat's are animals that do best with companions, like another kitty friend.

The bald spot on the arm concerned me, are you sure your kitty doesn't have fleas?
