My first thought is, has he ever been in Boy Scouts? If not, I would think about having him think about places to volunteer that would educate him in saftey of various kinds. He is 13, and he has the capacity to understand that if he is going to do things like that, that he not only has to understand where NOT to do these things but to also have a fire extinguisher near by, and how to use it. Ex., to put out fires with an extinguisher, it must be done with focus, calm, quickly (since certain fires become hotter the longer they burn), and short bursts at a time. He also needs to know, or should know, that something that could put out one kinds of fire, such as water, could in fact not work with other types (gas). And this only pertains to fire...the volunteering could be with a rescue squad...just a thought:-) He needs something to do, and mentors to do it with! Good luck!!

haha yeah. I mean, sadly yes. I was about 12 or 13 something. I was just sitting there looking at the candle and I put a paper towel into it and it burned really fast and let go. Luckily my cousin had a bowl of water near by. I never played with fire again..
My brother when her was like 3 or 4 went under our WOODEN bunk bed with the lighter and played with it. My parents were looking for him because it got really quiet in the house and found him under there playing with it. He rarely touches a lighter now unless it is necessary.

Your going to hate this but..boys will be boys. My nephew set a mattress on fire in the spare bedroom and was trying to put it out when I walked by and saw it. He didnt mean to he was just playing with a lighter {which he shouldnt have been doing} he was 6 and is now 17 and remembers it. Yes what could have happened makes you sick to your stomach we as parents can understand the WHAT IF's children often dont.

my son is always wanting to burn something I had a three wick candle one time that my son burned army men over and stuck them into my candle. I now have a burn pit and allow him to have a fire every now and then. Now he ties Amy guys to sticks and hold them over the fire with marsh mellows. The doctors says that boys go through this and that we don't have anything to worry about. Now he has out grown it just like the doctors said he would. Allow him to do it in a controlled environment. He will get over it. Hang in there

Kids do this sometimes. I remember when I was younger I lit a wad of paper towels on fire....went up pretty fast. Didnt burn the house down or anything. Please make sure to speak to your son about how serious this is and what could have happened.

it's a very scary thought!
when i was about that same age, a friend and i were playing with fire on a hillside...just about set the whole hill on fire when a neighbor man came running and put it out before it got out of control...of course by the time he got there, we had high-tailed it away as fast as we could

When i was a little kid about 7-12 my dad would let me play with fire in the back yard, when he had his friends over. I eventually started making bombs and blowing things up ( apples, g i joes, pumpkins etc. ) It can lead to bad things!!
