PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT DOUGLAS IN THE TYSON FIGHT BEING ON THE CANVAS MORE THAN 10 SECONDS IN REAL TIME WHEN THE REF'S COUNT WAS ONLY AT 7 OR 8. IT IS A COMMON OCURRENCE THAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WHEN A FIGHTER FAILS TO GO TO THE NEUTRAL CORNER. PEOPLE SHOULD STOP USING THAT AS A EXCUSE IN THIS FIGHT OR ANY OTHER BOUT.

Smitty ~
You are so right. If Tyson wasn't counted out the first time by referee Octavio Meyran, he would have been counted out at some other time in that bout. It was meant to be. People need an excuse Smitty.

Thanks for the question Brother.

I agree you cant expect fighters (in this case Douglas) to keep a count in their own heads when they get knocked down, they should just have to listen to the refs count. Many fighters purposely don't get up until the count of 9 as they are giving themselves time to recuperate, even if they could of got up sooner it makes sense if knocked down to give yourself the max recovery time even if its just a few seconds.

Disagree. The rounds are 3 minutes right? 60 seconds per minute right? When you are down it is for 10 seconds right? If the referee suddenly get to keep time, why do we have a "time keeper"? If you look at that fight, the "time keeper" has a different count. Maybe the rounds should be "about" 3 minutes with "about" 1 minute in between... I mean, whatever the referee wants to do right? Out of curiosity, when there is a knockdown in boxing, the referee sometimes escorts the standing fighter to the corner. Who is the person the referee looks to outside of the ring to know where he should be on his count? Oh yeah... the time keeper.

Sorry Smitty. I would have to disagree. Those controversies happen because it was true in the first place. The referee should count with accordance to how long the fighter was in the ground. Watch the De la Hoya Hopkins fight. Referee Kenny Bayless led Hopkins to a neutral corner when he knocked down De la Hoya, when he started counting on Oscar, he started at the count of 3 or 4 because he was down for about that long when he was leading Hopkins to a neutral corner.

I disagree totally. It is the ref's responsibility to begin counting as soon as the boxer hits the mat. Anything else is unfair and is a disadvantage to the other fighter. Tyson should of won that fight.

I disagree with you the ref messed that fight up so what your saying is the ref can start counting when ever he want,s to that fight changed history neither fighter was ever the same and Mike Tyson never cried about it

Was it Tunney's fault that he was smart enough to stay down until the ref reached the number he wanted to get up at. Tunney could have gotten up sooner but he was hurt and wanted all the time allotted him. If Douglas was hurt enough he wouldn't be able to continue. Not only was he able to fight he knocked out Mr. Indestructible.

Smitty, I agree. Let's answer it this way. If Tyson had not taken Douglas lightly, approached his training and preparation for this bout in a professional way as an undisputed heavyweight champion should, we wouldn't be talking about any count.

I agree. Simply put, the ref's decision is final. No if's and's or but's about it. Some fans will look for any excuse they can find sometimes.
