I have a student who has to research this sport, but she knows very little English. How can I explain wushu to her?

(I am her English teacher so, please, no diatribes against immigrants)

I am a high school ESL teacher, and one of my beginner students has to research this sport for a paper in her PE class. I want to help her, but I don't know anything about the sport. How can I explain the sport in simple terms?

"Martial Discipline", refers usually to the standardized martial routines established by the Chinese government after the Cultural Revolution for competition.

It is the correct term for the more commonly known but misused term kung fu, which roughly translates to "skill" and refers specifically to the energy, feeling and effort expended in doing or making something. A craftsman or artisan could be said to have good "kung fu" in the way in which they carry out their craft. If you saw the movie Fearless with Jet Li, Wushu is a Chinese martial arts that is about the community instead of the individual. It's a form of martial arts that focuses strongly on disciplining oneself.

Jet Li was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and he explained, as has been done previously, that WuShu means 'martial arts'. He added that it comes from words that mean 'stop fight'. I think that implies to either stop a fight offensively or defensively. One way or another, end it quickly and decisively, hopefully without seriously maiming the opponent.
