I saw a really cool way they handled this issue on "Super Nanny". It is a show about how to raise kids that are out of control.
She started by explaining to the little one that there was a "binky fairy" who gave out binkies to all the "little girls/boys" that really needed them. She also explained how the "binky fairy" couldn't afford to buy all those binkies and needed big girls/boys to donate theirs.
She brought in a decorative bag, and had the little one go and collect all the binkies and put them in the bag. They then hung the bag from a tree outside, putting in the last one that was in the little girl's mouth.
The next day, the bag of binkies was gone, and in it's place was a "thank you" bag with a dolly in it.
I thought this was a novel way of handling the situation.

Just throw it away !! YOU are the boss , not the child ! You should feel lucky , my daughter was a thumb sucker ! I couldn't throw that away , but I REALLY , wanted to . We had a really hard time .She just turned 11 years old yesterday and sometimes we still catch it in her mouth when she is asleep, and just pull it out .You pick up lots of germs on your hands ,so I really hated it and her thumb was always wet and stinky ,and chapped !! A pacifier is a breading ground for germs too ! Even if you wash it regularly. It can also mess up their teeth ! Just throw it away ,or put up in "baby box" if that's something you do , but DON'T let them see you do it ! The child can't buy a new one,and if they can then are WAY , WAY too old for it anyway. Just be the grown -up, and don't be a push -over if they want it back ! They will learn to cope , please be patient,if you give it back when they cry ,they will soon learn " they get what they want when they cry for it ! " This is not good and YOU will NEVER win !!!! Good Luck.

My daughter was 2 when we broke her on the doctor's orders. Her top two teeth wouldn't descend and her bottom teeth were becoming crooked. I snipped the end of her binky's and that made them uncomfortable. It also made me feel terrible because she'd cry and beg me to fix it. I wish I had heard the story of the binky fairy. You tell the child that it is time to give her pacifiers to the fairy so that she can give them to little babies who need them . The fairy leaves a present for the little one in return. This is a much nicer way to do it and has worked for the moms I know who tried it.
Good luck.

Just take it because if the child sucks on a pacifier beyond 12 months they are more than likely to develop whats called a tongue thrust.

I got lucky with my kids it was easy. The older one just
didn't like the pacifiers and the younger one only liked
the one the hospital had provided. One of my friends
just started to hide the pacifiers or throw them away
until her kids didn't need them anymore.

Do it as soon as you can, throw all the pacifiers away!! You'll have to endure the crying but it won't last long, and it's worth it! Soon it will all be over with :)

First only allow it at bedtime after explaining the new rule to the baby. Then after a month or so of only having it at bedtime, pretend like you cna't find it and look for it together and that will be the end of it.

I recommend using a book "the Binky Ba-Ba Fairy" which helps kids give up their pacifiers and bottles. It really works!
Check it out

a nice way to do it if your child is old enough to understand is tell your child another baby that's just been born needs it so you tie it to a balloon and let your child let it fly off into the sky
