How do the two compare as far as workouts. Any ideas on how much time I would need to spend on a stationary bike to equal something like a five mile run?

Depending on the intensity of the workout, you would need to spend more time on the stationary bike to get the same cardio workout form the running (also depending on your pace). In general, running is excellent for you, but over time, runners may develop joint issues in the knees. The best thing to do is to consult a personal trainer or your doctor. How long does it take you to run 5 miles? Maybe you should spend that much time on a stationary bike. The distance really doesn't matter but the time spent with an elevated heart rate is what is important.

I heard its good to do both because you are using different muscles. On the bike, you build muscles around your knees that help prevent injuries, like tendonitis, when you run. As far as calorie burning goes, you will burn a lot more calories running.

best way to find out since no two bodies are a like.
Use a calorie counting watch and do both activties for the same amout of time and see which one burns the most calories for you
