I am currently in the Army National Guard, current duty MOS is 31B (MP) and and about 2 months into a 12 month deployment.

While there are many, many jobs an MP can do here in Iraq, I am in convoy security. My main job is that of a convoy commander and consists of escorting convoys around the country to ensure they get from Point A to Point B safely. I ensure everyone is prepared and can shoot, move and communicate. The safety of all military and contractor lives and vehicles rests in my hands. I communicate with other military entities as needs of the convoy dictate.

There is much too much involved to really go into here - and OPSEC (OPerational SECurity) dictates that this is not really the forum for an in-depth study of my job. The best thing you can do is talk to a recruiter. MOST recruiters are on the up-and-up and will tell you the truth.

Let me just tell you this - I LOVE my job and cannot envision doing anything else here in country. You DO NOT want to be a Fobbit (one who never leave the FOBs or Forward Operating Bases). When you are on the road, you get to see the country. You are doing something vital to the war effort. You get away from the politics of the FOB. Yes, "garrison life" is hitting Iraq hard now. Best to keep away from the bullsh!t - and being involved in convoy operations is a fantastic way to do it!

Now, what is life like? On the FOBs, it is long and dull. Lots of time doing maintenance on weapons, vehicles and radios (remember: shoot, move and communicate). That equipment will save your life and is all you have to depend on out on the road. Plenty of time to go to the gym and MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation). Obviously, we have the Internet and AT&T Call Centers to call home.

Have a GREAT Army day!!

I am an MP. When I went, I was on a PSD team. On Victory Base Complex, the Reserve and National Guard MPs drove around on the FOB giving tickets, and doing "garrison" duties. All the Active MPs were doing MP field operations outside the wire, like patrols, PSD, cordon & search, house to house checks, convoy security, etc.

One of my co-workers just got back from being a MP at one of the bases in Iraq. He said nothing went on at the base. Every once in a while he would see smoke from an explosion.

Your truck will most probably be targeted by a roadside IED.
