I have been a heavy alcoholic drinker for around 4 years & rarely missed a night drinking, my recent alcohol intake as reached a peak of 70-120 units per week. I decided 3 days ago to abstain & go cold turkey, it is now 70 hours since i last had a drink & all i have experienced so far is fatigue but just started to feel nauseas. Am i out of the danger zone of risk of DT's? (delerium tremens) ? Thanks

Yes you are out of the danger zone for the DT's after 70 hours, but you will not start to full feel the full effects of sobriety for about 4 days.

The first 3 days are the worst - I went through this more times than I'd like to admit, but I always found that moving around helped. Even pacing around - if you don't want to go outside yet.

When the 3 days are over hunger will start to kick back in - EAT - you will feel tons better - and then you will sleep!

It's all up hill from there - the trick is, however, not to start drinking again - that's the tough one - good luck!!

I have seen people "in the danger zone" as you call it, for up to a week, when withdrawing from alcohol. It can be a dangerous thing. Take care, and if you start to feel real sick, go to the hospital. Yes, a person CAN die from withdrawing. Im an Intensive care nurse, and have seen people die in the hospital due to severe withdrawl symptoms. It is not just the DT's, there can be other problems as well. Good for you for quitting. I recommend AA meetings as well.

Remember something about alcohol, hon.... it is toxic, and as such, with your previous 4 year history, you body has gotten used to that toxin. It is not unknown for those who go cold turkey to have a cardiac event, perhaps even fatal. I forget the mechanism of just how alcohol and with withdrawal of it produces that effect. In your place, I would not stop cold turkey. You did not begin to drink tons right away, you ought not to do anything but taper off, and you may need some help to do that. Again, in your place, I'd be seeking some help in ending your alcoholic addiction... Good luck, hon

Hi.

I don`t think that you can die from alchol withdrawl. There are however medications that can be used to help you out.
One of them is called Nootropil (Piracetam)
If I am not mistaken, you can use it to blunt the affects of withdrawl and also to reverse some of the affects of alchol.
You can speak to a doctor about this.

Also, take a look at these sites;
www.remedyfind.com
and
www.askapatient.com

You can see what people use this medication for, and whether it works for them.

Good luck!!!
