Curious, You talking about "americans" that live in this country... Why in the hell would we want to learn to speak spanish..... As for all the illegals, they SHOULDN'T even be here... something about the word illegal, says it all. Those that are here legally, they should HAVE to learn english..... I went into Wal-Mart awhile back and happened to ask a Wal-Mart employee where I could locate a certain item and they couldn't speak english, they had to go and get someone else to answer my question.... Then I asked the first employee " in spanish", how long had she been here in the US and she told me....10 years... Sorry... That's total BS.... But, hey, I can hear now what some of you are saying....... So, when can I come by and steal a few things from your house.... Oh, that's illegal ??? when does it apply...only when you think it should .... or better yet.... let's move down to Mexico, and by god... where ever we move, those people better learn how to speak english.....

In order to learn people have to WANT to learn. I do not think it's important to distinguish either English or Spanish. Foreign Language absolutely should be part of education, it helps to teach us about no only their language but their values, morals, and cultural differences. However, it should be a choice of what language to take. If your question is regarding the United States, I believe English is and should be the national language. Part of the reason that it is hard for Mexican Americans to integrate themselves into American Society is because of the language barrier (and the long periods of time, generations, that it takes for Mexican Americans to learn and use the English language, especially as compared with immigrants of other nationalities) I mean should we also have Chinese, Japanese, German, and Russian as a national language? We already have Spanish and English versions of DMV forms, all major companies have phone options for either English or Spanish. We have immigrants from hundreds of different countries that have hundreds of different languages. So tell me why is Spanish so special?

I believe that the great force and unity showed by those masive manifestations on the past year, could be used to create institutions to teach english to those mexican and latin immigrants in the USA, that haven't learned yet.

As long as the younger people have learned because of the need of education, they could help the stay in home mothers and people who works in the fields, so they have more tools to stay in the USA and to get better options.

About the people who speak english learning spanish, they can learn IF they want, because most of them have the posibilities to pay for classes.

And eventually they will do it, at the moment when they notice that there are more spanish speaking consumers for their products and services, so, i wouldn't mind to force that.

Pay attention in school! I am living proof that it is possible to learn a foreign language in high school. I took Spanish from the 8th grade all the way through college. I had mostly good teachers, paid attention in class and always got straight-As. I´m the only person I know of who learned to speak Spanish fluently as a result of taking a high school course.

Going to Mexico every summer with my family also helped.

No need to teach those who speak English, Spanish, as long as they are living here, they should be required, and in fact, it should be mandated, that they learn to speak English. It's way past time that we take our country back. If you come into my place of business, you better ask me what you want in English because none of my employee's speak Spanish and I don't plan for them to learn.

PS. When I was stationed on Embassy Duty in Japan, guess what??? I had to learn to speak Japanese. So there you are.

all we can do is make the schooling readily available for them, communication can bring understanding. The individual has to make the decision and the effort to take the first step. Im willing to help out any person that would like to learn English or Spanish, but it is very important to learn the verbal and written. I suggest that you take a class AND communicate with people that are originally from that country, really practice with people, dont be shy!

The problem is that learning Spanish is great in some of our areas for people who will drop out of school. However, people who are trying for higher callings need different languages, typically, such as Chinese, Japanese, etc. It is unfair to our less educated that our less educated ESL students come out of school bilingual using moneys not expended on our English speaking children, due to education fund shortages from teaching ESL. However, if you are going into investment banking, for example, you would only want to learn Spanish if you felt that would fit into your future practice.

We used to have languages in our public schools in California. I took French starting in 7th grade and German on top of that, starting in 9th. However, that is late to learn fluency and even that amount of language has been cut along with PE, music and gifted programs in order to pay for the ESL education of so many too poor to pay their own way, whose parents came illegally.

I have no problem with those whose parents came legally, but if only they were here, our immigration laws would have a hope of regulating this mess so our people weren't so education deprived.

Now it is good to learn to speak other languages; however, I interpret this question is trying to imply that the United States should force its people to learn Spanish to accomodate the immigrant population.

The United States should not have to sacrifice its culture and heritage to accomodate foreigners.

It is the responsibility of an immigrant to legally immigrate into the country that they desire and practice the language and customs of that country. They should not give up their old traditions either, because that is a part of their identity, yet they need to incorporate themselves in the country that they willingly left their native land to reside.
