The bible states "whosoever believes in Me, will be saved". That's it. Not whosoever believes in the bible, reads the bible or anything else. Believe in Him, not a book.
When ALL the sects that call themselves Christians can hold up the same bible and say they believe in the same thing, what a witness that would be! How can Christians bring non-believers to God when they can't get along with each other??

#1 Cause of atheism? Huh?

Atheism has existed long before the bible.
If anything, atheism led to the bible. For the people who just had to have an "explanation" of why.

Why bother reading it? To be educated. Ignorance is not bliss

The Bible is a foundational myth for English Literature. If you want to understand English Lit, you need to understand it.

(I am sure many of the Christians here are as clueless about Shakespeare as they are the Bible.)

You are right sweetie the bible is one of the reasons I turned and became Atheist after all the mix up and confusion it left me feeling down and unsure. How could a book that many Christians claim to be so wonderful make someone feel so confused?
good question*

Because our goal is to glorify God, not stop atheism. The Bible is the Word of God, and reading it helps us know God better, know His commands, His nature, and with the transforming power of the Holy Spirit within us, helps us be more Christ-like. This process is called sanctification.

Why not? I'm sure you have read many books that don't necessarily have a practical purpose. But, no one has to read it, or anything if it's not suitable for the reader.

It is an important work for its historical importance, and because so many people believe in it. It is necessary to understand where they are coming from, and to be able to carry on an intelligent discussion of its contents. One may (as I do) suppose it to be nonsense; it is necessary to be able to say why. Similarly, one may read other religious works such as the Qur'an to understand its adherents; it, too, is nonsense, and again it is necessary to be able to explain why.

#1 cause? that's a new one.
if you don't read the bible how will you know how to get saved? it tell's you how. and if your going by mans word instead of God's there's a good chance you are not saved to begin with.
but if you don't believe in God then his word's mean nothing to you anyways

I say let them read it... better yet, force them to read it. It would make our lives a lot easier if they realised how absurd the Bible is on their own.
