I did a state return through TaxEngine and had to pay to file the state electronically, federal was free. I kept waiting for the refund, when I went back into TaxEngine, they said it was rejected by the IRS, but didn't say why. Said state did not go through since Federal didn't. Am I entitled to get my $10 back I paid with my debit card since state never went through. Naturally their website does not have a live person to talk to.

you need to find out why the return was rejected, call the help line for the program you used, correct the error that is causing the reject and then resubmit the return.

Call the IRS 72 hours after resubmitting it to confirm that it went through

Check what you agreed to when you signed up for the service. If you can or did print off the completed forms you could have an accountant review it and resubmit your return. For future advice my accountant costs about $150 which may seem like a lot of money but two years ago she save me about $2,000 dollars in capital gains taxes and each year she gets me more money back than I would have saved having done them myself.
