you will need at least 128mb ram to run xp and at least a 4 gb hardrive. As long as you have these specs or greater it should run. I`ve had a similar error during setup but with a different file. turned out it was dirt on the disc. Give it a clean and try again!
P.s has to be at least pentium 2

Did you remove Windows 98se completely before installing Windows XP? Also did you back up all your files on an external hard drive? In order to install a different windows operating system correctly you need to uninstall the old version first.
Good luck. Write back if you have more problems.

The money side to my answer would be to forget about it and get a mac, but the cost effective side is to contact the microsoft support line, sorry i do not know their number, and ask them for assistance in installing your microsoft product. if that does not work, take it back to the place you bought it and say it was defective IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IT IS BEING USED!!! if this is your case, youd best hope you have your reciept. Heck, try vista if you want to, but i think i will wait until my computer becomes out of date and does not work at a acceptable performance rate. If you need to contact microsoft, the support line number should be included in the manual to the computer upgrade you just tried to use. i think mac is better because you can buy software to run windows on the mac and switch to mac again. if you plan to do that, i would save the disc so you can install the operating system to the "Virtual Workstation" because if you do not, the workstation will seem like a body with no soul. it just proves that mac is a better system because it can be flexible and use both OS systems

If you are unable to get XP installed, get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).
It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.
You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".
It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.
Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.
Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

i do not think that the hardware for a Win98SE edition would be able to support WinXP.
i believe the minimum system requirements are:
1) 64MB RAM (certain features are disabled. 128MB preferred.)
2) 233MHz processor clock speed. (certain features are disabled. 300MHz preferred.)
3) 1.5GB worth of HDD space, excluding XP SP2 (quote at around 3GB with all updates.).
if you would like to try to install Windows XP SP2, i would recommend a complete format of your system via MS DOS, then trying to install SP1 first. SP2 would wait, but until you have installed SP2, do not, i repeat, not connect to the internet as your computer would get infected by viruses easily.
MS DOS command for formatting system: C:\> format c:
some warning message will appear, then press Y and
and before you format your system, check if your CD for Win XP is a bootable CD. do this by shutting down your computer, and turning it on, inserting the CD, then quickly turn it off again. lastly, power the system on and keep pressing F8 till a screen comes up to ask if you would like to boot from the CD. if it does, then your CD is a bootable CD. if not, do not reformat the PC until you get a bootable CD.
