I love it when that happens, its normally when you're in a very light stage of sleep, just as you are dropping off. gets your heart racing and the adrenaline pumping.

I think most people experience this. Some say it is when you are about to astral project if you believe that sort of thing -(when the spirit leaves the body temporarily and goes off on its travels while the body sleeps)

The jump or twitch is when the Spirit returns to the body too fast.

I get this all the time. It's when you're falling asleep, but a noise, or a thought, or anything, jerks you back awake. It could be your subconscious picking up a sound outside or something.

I've done this when I'm very tired, or especially, when I'm jet-lagged. It always makes me so mad, because it's so startling! And then sometimes I have trouble going back to sleep. I think it's the body's way of releasing tension, my DH used to do it all the time and he had a v. high-stress job.

This is actually when your body/brain is going down the levels of sleep into REM sleep. Since the brain is moving "down" your actual body has the sensation of falling and you jerk awake. Usually you do not notice this transition but when you do it can be unsettling.

Yes it's very common. It is when you are asleep in REM (dreaming) and your body is paralised(don't panic this is normal and always happens) then when you wake up and you are no longer paralysed and so your muscles jerk awake. Hope this helps.

I have and its very common. I've read, contrary what others have said, that its your brain changing patterns. If that is true or not, I don't know. You can't believe everything you read. Its a weird feeling. My legs always jerk though.

I've had this sensation for as long as I can remember. Even in childhood.
Disconcerting at times, but I have, touch wood, no medical issues at all.
