No earthly thing can hurt our soul, so it must be the ego

First of all there is no clear definition for soul. Like how we define air, wind, heat etc.
But we all have souls. We accept that. The actual physical heart in our breast beats at about 100,000 times a day, pumping two gallons of blood per minute, 100 gallons per hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for an entire life time! The vascular system that sends this life-giving blood is over 60,000 miles long: it is more than two times the circumference of the earth. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that the heart starts beating before the brain is formed; the heart begins to beat without any central nervous system. The dominant theory was that the central nervous system is what is controlling the entire human being from the brain, yet we know now that in fact the nervous system does not initiate the heartbeat. It is actually self-initiated; we would say, it is initiated by God. Atheists would say it evolved.
Soul is a very sophisticated entity residing in all of us. Ego is a feature of soul which has to be controlled. Or else it will kill the soul. Every day we hear & see so many deaths around us. This should make us realise that we have soul. May be the word & name may differ. During insults we as a whole human get affected. Soul initiates this effect. Even our hands react, legs react while insulted.

Those who insult others are not conversant with the nature of the soul which is beyond insulting others. Soul by definition, is not the body. What a person insults is the external body which is superficially called as self. But, the actual self, the soul is aloof from the body. The body changes, which is external, from boyhood to youth etc... and keeps changing forever moment to moment. The mind where thoughts come from also changes.

One therefore insults the external.
1. The gross body by kicking, spatting etc. . .
2. The subtle body, which is mind, by criticizing etc . . .

But the soul remains aloof from that insults. The body itself will perish some day, but the eternal spirit soul does not die.

They cannot insult the soul because they do not the know about the existence of the soul. So, how can they insult something which they don't know or aware of it in the first place.

You are asking a interesting question.
But first of all have we ever realized that there is a soul inside us?

We are that soul. I am not the hand, leg, eye, nose etc....
It is my hand, my leg, my eye, my nose etc... It is my this, my that etc..., then what is I or where is I. It is not I am hand, I am leg etc... It is my hand , my leg etc. . . Any body can analyze this way and come to the conclusion that I am not the body but separate from the body. I am what I am, the spirit soul.

Realizing the soul or anything for that matter, is to be felt cannot be explained. For example, I realize happiness by eating a ice cream. It is an experience and cannot be explained. Similarly, realizing the soul, is not something which can be explained. It has to be experienced or realized. By the way, the soul is not something inside us. We are that soul. You are the soul. I am the soul. You realize what you are the soul. I realize what I am, the soul.

It's the ego that gets hurt first. No matter how good person u r, u will think twice before helping the person again who has hurt u.

Ur soul will forgive, but not forget. U will volunteer to help the person b'coz u have forgiven the person already.

I don't know, but my "feelings" get hurt. I can ignore obviously mean or malicious people, but sometimes people say things - or worse, if they say I hurt their feelings and I didn't mean or want to - and my heart hurts and I get a weird feeling in my stomach. Maybe it is my ego, but I think it is my soul. I don't think my ego would care if I hurt someone else's feelings.

In my opinion it may be ego. Realising soul is the end of enjoyment. Some may realised it, not yet me.

whenever such questions appear in our mind we should remind ourselves that we are human beings... we carry along all the good and bad qualities and the strengths and weaknesses of human beings...

i do not know whether our soul is there or not... however, as you also think we definitely have something like our self respect and if somebody hurts it we do react and that is natural... anyways we should take it easy and should try to be not so very touchy...

yes, ego is there in us... and we should be careful that it should not dominate our persona...

I think both, your soul is what motivates your feelings.
My own experience;
at first I wanted to hurt them back, I got angry and talked talked talked about what they did to me, but I got no relief.

then about a year later I ask God to forgive me for my anger against them because it was eating me up. then I got relief and now I relies how many things I may have done to others and I sure wish I hadn't maybe they feel the same way.
forgiveness sets you free.
