Great pets....I've been around cats all my life....(also have a couple dogs) and they are great tooo!!

All cats do not spray. It is usually the male, especially if he is not neutered, that marks his territory by spraying. Cats do use their nose to smell almost all of the time. On occasion they do use the mouth to savor and pick up a special odor. On a very rare basis a female cat will back up to an object and spray a little. This doesn't happen very ofter tho.

Female cats can spray-
Whether they DO depends on whether they feel a need to mark their territory and is affected by several things such as whether they're spayed, if there are other cats around, and the personality of the cat itself.
They smell with their noses. They do also smell with their Jacobson's organ - a special organ in the roof of their mouth. It can look like they're smelling with their tongues when they do this (called flehming) as they curl up their lips and expose their tongue. When snakes and reptiles smell with their tongue, they are also using their Jacobson's organ.
The reason they have another organ for smelling is because the Jacobson's organ can detect pheromones, which is something the nose does not do. Many animals have Jacobson's organs, including people, but in humans it is vestigial and no longer functions.

Female cats DO spray even if they have been spayed. I've only had one that ever did it, and I never knew why, but I've had multitudes of cats and only that one little girl did. I've never heard that cats smell with their tongues...they have noses and that's what they are for, I think someone mixed a cat up with a snake or a lizard who do smell through their tongues.

A few female cats will spray, mostly though this is a male cat problem. Get her spayed and she won't do this. This is a cats way of marking their territory. Males in the wild do this so that other males will stay away and the sent will draw female cats to him when the female cat is in heat. Indoor cats do this by instinct.

Female cats can, and do spray. They do not smell with their tongues- they use their noses! They do use their whiskers to help them navigate in the dark though; they are very sensitive and can detect nearby objects by brushing against them even the slightest bit.

Female cats spray when they are not fixed and in heat. I didn't know they did either until I saw my cat do it.
Cats have scent glands in their mouths as well as their noses. So, if they want to get a better sniff of something, they'll first use their noses then breathe through their mouths to inhale more deeply. You may see your cat sit with her mouth slightly open after smelly something especially stinky.
