Actual SSN "cards" I think go back to the mid-1930's as for issuing them at "birth" I think around 1998 - 2000.... But, relax before Bush gets out of office...you won't have to worry about getting a SS card at birth, the babies will get a micro-chip with an identification number. As for the rest of us... If you want any of your goverment benefits, you'll have to get the micro-chip.... As for me.... I already have picked the number I want.... 6-21-3-11 / 25-15-21 / 2-21-19-8, Now correlate that to the alphabet and you'll see where I am coming from......

I think it was in the late 50's . My children were born in 1960 and 61 ans they had to have one .
3 sisters born in 50's and they didn't .

I don't think it was ever mandated...when my son was born in 2001 I had to fill out an application if I wanted one for him.

oh gosh, when i did my family tree i found people was applying for this info in the 1950's. it could go back before then. i just know this from family research. it told when a ancestor applied.

Good question that I haven't found the answer to. I know for me it was around 13yrs of age. I'll keep looking.
