I have a chiuahuah puppy and she is so cute. However, I hate overweight chiuahuahs. I know that they don't need to have food down all the time but I don't want to starve her either. I usually give her a big handfull of food three times a day, sometimes more. Is that enough or should I give her more. I want her to be healthy. What do you think?

Look at the feeding guidelines on the package; divide that amount by three. Feed that amount for each meal, and use a measuring cup to make sure she is getting enough.

If you don't have a book on your type of dog; look it up online and ask about the feedings on a puppy chiuahuah. They should tell you. I think some people put food out a couple of times a day and give them a chance to eat it and then take it away when you think they are through. Take the bowl away until the next feeding. I'm not sure how many times a day they should eat.

In most breeds you should not see the ribs (or only a faint outline) but you should easily feel them by running a hand over their side, puppies probably should be a TAD fat vs thin. Adjust food amounts according to the results. The package feeding recommendations are guidelines not gospel. Amount will vary bey your dogs activity level & metabolism and not all dog food should be fed in the same amounts.
When she finishes growing you can use you bathroom scale if you wish to check weight and adjust food accordingly.

Look on the bag of dog food and there should be a chart that tells you how much per day you should feed your dog. Find out the exact weight that your dog should weigh (don't keep her too skinny or she won't be healthy). On the chart there should be the exact amount of food to give her to keep her at that weight. If there is not a chart on your bag of food then call your vet and they will give you a print out of what you need to do exactly.
