You need a firewire connection. Don't worry if your pc hasn't got a firewire card, they're cheap and easy to install.

Usually firewire (1394) cable is not standard for camcorders as there are different pc/laptop-end firewire pin configuration (4, 6 PIN) depending on pc/laptop brands. However, USB cables are supplied as standard since almost all pc/laptop use standard USB.
If by this time, you still haven't got the rite firewire cable, video capture can also be thru USB as I had experienced few years back with my old Dell laptop (no firewire slot). USB is slower but still can do. I then posted a question in answers on the procedure for video capture and the best answer was/is (am still using it) thru Windows Movie Maker.
a. Set the camera mode to play recorded video.
b. In the Movie Maker Tasks pane/Capture Video, click Capture from video device.
WMMaker help is very detailed.

I'm pretty certain that your Sony does not use a firewire, so you should connect a regular video cable between your Sony's yellow RCA plug and a TV capture card that you install on your PC or laptop. A separate audio cord must be used at the same time. Any $50 capture card will suffice and probably includes both cables.
