Anything that will get you moving is going to help. Focus on proper diet and excercise as much as your body will allow you. Even if it is a short walk everyday. Nutrion and activity are your key. It works, you just have to stick with it. It's easier on your knees than the treadmill is. You might try just doing it for 5 minutes at a time, but maybe a few times a day, until you can hang with it painfree for longer periods of time. I used to get onto the treadmill during commercials when I was watching TV. 5 minutes 6-8 times a day does a lot more good than none at all. :)
The feet thing will eventually go away. When I started roller blading, OMG my feet felt like I'd been walking on a fence post. They really hurt. After a while they toughened up though. Your's will too, especially once the weight begins to come off.
