I am building a machine that will have paint balls rapidly shot at it. I need help designing a way that the machine can detect when it is hit by a paint ball and information be sent to the computer.

All ideas are appreciated.
Thanks

You can try using an alarm system shock detector. These are designed to detect sharp blows and glass breakage. It may work well enough so as to only detect a paint ball impact and not some object thrown by a player. (Thereby preventing false detection)

You need an onboard shock detection system. There are several vendors making such devices. I have experience with the one I list in the source list below, do a search on portable shock recorders for others.

an accelerometer might work. Would detect the sudden movement caused by the paintball hitting it.
