There's really no best style. The individual enhances the style. A system that incorporates groundfighting and "street" self defense is the way to go. Systems that lean heavily towards sparring will definitely improve your focus, especially if the system offers weapons training. The most important thing is if the system is practical. Sword fighting will enhance your focus, but it may not be practical (a mugger tries to hit you up, you won't be trying to draw a sword-it's illegal).

Talk to instuctors in your area. Some schools offer a free class (my opinion, that's the more professional way to do business). Try that first before committing.

Best of luck :)

I have taken lessons in several styles and the one's I found to be excellent were Wu Wei Wing Chun Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do. Wu Wei I think you would like. It was developed for smaller people especially women. Jeet Kune Do was developed by Bruce Lee and is extremely effective on many levels. It is for the mind and body in all forms of discipline.

You really don't need to take martial arts for improvment of your concentration. You can do many other things for this. But if you do still choose this path, I suggest sstaying away from the linear forms such as the Japanese and Korean forms as well as the American sport Karate. For women I most often suggest the Wu Wei Wing Chun gung fu. It was originally designed for a petit woman. At least that is what the folklore says. It is of a circular and free flowing form that is not so restricting as the linear power forms. Several types of ging fu are good for the smaller person.

I will say, that no matter which you choose, it will take a serious dedication and isn't something to do on a whimsical thought.
Just closing your eyes and focusing on a bird's song will help you with the focus of your mind and concentration. The same goes for certain types of music. Put on some jazz or classical music and clos your eyes and try to focus on individual instruments. This too will help. Also, go out into the woods and sit and close your eyes and listen to the nature around you and single out particular sounds and focus on them.

Find one that you like and stick with it for awhile until. you experience a level of proficiency. Expand from there. If you decide to add other ways of moving into your programming you will have have a better base of understanding of the discipline involved in attaining those as well. Why practice martial arts? I sucked at pretty everything else. I was motivated by a need for wanting to feel protected. I wanted confidence and an ability to move through life in other areas with less fear. I'm always working at it. Martial arts practice has also taught me how to make myself a better guitar player.

There is no best art, only best artists.
As far as focus, yes, studying a martial art will help you develop your own focus and self-discipline. This is a very internal aspect of the art. This can be done without martial training. If all you want is the focus improvement you may yourself unhappy with the rest of the art. Maybe try Yoga or Tai Chi. Many martial arts have physical application drills, I find the people that visit our school looking for only the internal aspect of the art get discouraged when they see how much physical work is required for the training.

I have been in martial arts for almost 8 years... THERE IS NO BEST STYLE... there are good parts and not so good parts from each style... the best thing to do is cross train as many styles as you can. That way you can pick what works best for you. Tradition in one style wont protect you from someone who understands all sides of combat.

Ninjutsu. It has the best parts of every art plus it is an art that uses three different types. Ninjutsu( elemental), Taijutsu (hand to hand), and Genjutsu (illusions and weaponry).
Also it is one of the arts that practices the shadow hand or taisuvakijutsu.

There is no "best" style. It is the artist, not the art. Find a good school regardless of the style.
