Your gf's dad asked you what your intentions were in dating his daughter, and did you "love" her, or just "like her" or "whatever", what would your reaction be? Even if her dad was laughing at the time, and had clearly had too much to drink. (After 4 1/2 months of dating)

My dad did this to my bf, and I think it really freaked him out. He broke it off a few weeks later saying that he wasn't falling in love with me and he felt he should be. I didn't know about this until afterward, when he told a mutual friend about it.

I think that the relationship ending was a combination of things. (He was worried from the start that I would be ready to settle down before he would. Plus, he is recently divorced, in his early 20's and dating an older woman with a child. We were and still are at different points in our lives.) But, I'm MOST interested in what your reaction that comment would have been!

Your dad torpedoed the relationship. It's perfectly fine for a dad to ask those kinds of questions but the way your dad did it was not the best.

two months after meeting my wife I told her father I wanted to marry her. He made comments that were less than nice. Guess what? I married her because I love her and only have to tolerate her dad.

If that's why he left shame on him. He isn't ready to be your husband or even a serious boyfriend.

that joke was just your dads way of breaking the ice... maybe he just wanted to know him better and the best way for your bf to be comfortable talking to your dad is by half meant jokes. a real man sticks around with the good stuff.... and challenges.

Well if your dad was obviously just joking around and that was the only reason that your bf broke it off then I think your bf is a sissy and you should be glad his milktoast butt is gone!

If it was clearly a joking matter, or even if it wasnt your boyfriend bolting on you isnt right at all. He must have had other reasons for leaving.

I've had this happen to me and I wasn't crazy about it. what I said was that my intentions were to get to know her better to see if there really was a future together.

more than likely i would have told him my intentions, not going into anything grotesque. the father has a right to know, not be left in the dark.
