I actually like the idea of being a bilinual nation, but one language should be primary. And everyone should learn that language (English).
Our country is divided enough as it is. We don't need half the people speaking one language & half the people speaking another!
I also think every child should be taught a secondary language. The kids that speak Spanish at home must learn English, but should also have Spanish classes so they learn to speak Spanish properly. And we should incourage English speaking kids to learn Spanish. (For some reason, many want to learn French, or German though few will ever have an opportunity to use it.)

I am assuming you are referring to Canada? If so, I find it laughable that it is referred to as a bilingual country, but 90% of the country cannot speak French. I am NOT French. I am actually from South Africa and have lived here for 7 years. Having been raised in a country that was bilingual at the time, every person was expected to at least be able to express themselves in the other language. There was no translation into English when the other official languages were used on TV. I think it should be enforced that every Canadian should learn French. You cannot call this a bilingual country when everything points to a unilingual populace.

We are not a "bilingual nation." We are an English speaking nation that has lots of people speaking many other languages.
I assume by bilingual you mean English and Spanish. What about all the other languages?

The USA is not bilingual, i guess. But if it were true, all the citizen should have both languajes, the english speakers as well as the spanish speakers.
Maybe if that were true, then there would be no need to stat if the spanish is one of the oficial languajes.
In my point of view this is a lost cause.
I am mexican, i live in Mexico, and i am so worried about MY people living in the USA because they need work and money to survive.
But i guess a productive cause would be, those big immigrant organizations trying to teach english to the immigrants so they could fit and adapt better to the country and the environment that have received them, and make it easier to be welcome.

I don't think the USA is a bilingual nation, but I think learning a second language (whatever it is) in an advantage for anyone who wants to either have more opportunities or travel abroad.

We are not a bilingual nation. English is the native language of the United States and in my opinion should be the official language.

We aren't a bilingual nation! We should adopt a law making English the official language! And my Puerto Rican husband and family all agree with this!

Personally, I'm tired of calling a company..."press one for English." "Marque el dos para Espanol." Or, going to the cash machine..."select language."
If we become a true bilingual country, the latin americans won't care about learning English, the most widely spoken language in the world. Then we will eventually have to force ourselves to speak only Spanish. Then we lower more standards so kids can all be equal. Then they win the country.

We are not a bi-lingual nation. We are probably a 167(or so)-lingual nation. In order to be on the same page we made English the common unifying language. It's only the Spanish speakers who are trying to cause more division and seperation. More will probably follow suit to make it no longer the United States.....but a place of total division. It won't be enough anymore to try and understand and deal with race, sex, culture and relegious differences.....now language will muddle the efforts even more and cause more problems. Happy now? I sure hope you're ready to tackle learning all the other languages as well because they're gonna want to exercise their right to not learn English too. It will be one disfunctional world all wrapped up on one area of a continent. A foreigner in your own country.
