Goffin's Cockatoo's run about 1200 at a reputable pet store. That's a small cockatoo. Cockatiels are also small cockatoo's, and you can buy one of those for around 100 bucks.

Macaws, most are 1000 or higher from a pet store. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a breeder willing to sell for less.

It's not the bird that is the biggest money cipher though. It's buying the cage and the endless supply of toys and all the varying foods that you need to give them. I have 6 large birds in my home right now, and I'm spending about 100 a month in just pellet for them.

You need to research about these two breeds. A Cockatoo is a very large, noisy bird with a big beak that can crack an almond in one crunch. Imagine how he must bite if he gets a bit cranky.

Macaws are also large birds that can be quite noisy. Although there are some Macaws that are a bit smaller like the Military. They're great talkers and usually bond with one person, but they really need special care. Plus, these birds can run as high as $3,000 in some places. Some, even more.

Both birds need a good diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains with a good seed mix. They are not the kind of birds that like to be left alone to sit in a cage. They love interaction and play time. A bored bird can start unusual activity like feather-picking. Ever see a bald bird?

Do your research. If this is a first bird for you, I would suggest something a bit smaller, like a Cockatiel, Love bird or Parakeet. You can get a Parakeet for under $20 or a Cockatiel for under $100. Be wise in your selection.

I just read the answer by "Star". She is totally wrong on these prices. She may be thinking of a Cockatiel, which is quite a bit smaller than a Cockatoo. I don't know of anywhere that you can buy one of these two long-living birds for a $100. That's just absurd.

I paid $800.00 for a Goffins Cockatoo, which is the smallest of all between the two kinds of birds you mentioned in 2002.

When I used to work at a pet store, the most expensive bird we had there was an Umbrella Moluccan Cockatoo. She was $2500.00 if I remember right. The Macaw was around 1200-1500 or so, but hopefully someone knows more than I do right now. It's been a while!

oooh... Um, macaws are all about the same size (except the Hyacinth.. the'yre HUGE) and will run you about $1000 to $2000 in a pet store, cheaper with breeders. Their temperments leave something to be desired. They are usually one person bird that can be a little vindictive if you have a spouse or partner that gets more attention than the bird.
Cockatoos are a little different. Sulphur Crested and Umbrella Cockatoos are smaller (muluccans are the bigger ones, they're salmon colored), but still run about the same price as macaws. They are way more personable, but VERY loud. They tend to scream at the top of their lungs and it can get quite annoying.
All larger birds are very MESSY, but they are THE coolest pets you could ever ask for. : )

Oh, and the person above me is nuts... You can NOT get a cockatoo or macaw that cheap. Maybe he's thinking of cockatiels

first of all a cockatoo is not that talkative and a macaw is only going to talk some (mine has @ 20-30 word vocabulary). both are going anywhere from 1200 up. but remember ..... you get what you pay for. just because bird A and B are look the same doesn't mean they are equal in quality. When you get ready to get a bird be sure to get it from a good reputable breeder that can tell you how the parents are cared for and they are not related.

Usually they can be pretty expensive... upwards of $1000 or better. I had Bugees... they were $30-$35 each; Cockatoos where $50-$70, with Lovebirds in the same price range. The more expensive birds, such as African Greys and Macaws, were $1500-$3000, but they've got a really long lifespan. Also, depends on the petstore...

A Cockatoo can cost about $500.00 depending on which you want and who is selling (there are several different kinds).
A Macaw will start at about $1,500.00 and can go as high as $30,000.00 if you want a Hyacinth
