Start out helping at a church and then as time progresses, your volunteer work will increase. I volunteer here at my college and most of the stuff I do is the student activities. Sometimes the activities involve the community also.

I had to do 3 internships in the past 2 years for my degree. I found the best experiences just by calling my local hospital and speaking to the volunteer coordinator. There are so many things to do in a hospital from pushing people in weelchairs to bringing meals to kids.
Also, I found luck signing up on the Red Cross website. They give you assignments close to your work or home. You may find yourself making meals and drinks and taking them to firefighters and rescue workers, working with home fire victims, natural disaster victims, etc. and there are opportunities for travel if you are willing.
The zoo is always waiting for volunteers. Since it is spring you can be there for the births of all the new babies.
The local animal shelter needs volunteers also.

What interests you? Do you see a need in your community that isn't being met or that is and you'd like to help out with them?
Open your eyes and look around, there are all kinds of opportunities to volunteer, whether it's for a day or a short time committment.
Walk for MS, canvass for the Kidney Foundation or the Cancer Society. Offer to tutor kids afterschool in afterschool programs with boys and girls clubs . Become a Girl Guide or Boy Scout leader.
Help out in your particular church or synagogue or mosque, lots of opportunities there.
Do errands for older people or disabled people without asking for any money or reward.
Use your talents and your compassion and empathy, I'm sure there are lots of opportunities in your community , if you just look into them.

Contact your local volunteer center. They have all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities, and can connect you with local non-profit agencies for longer-term projects. Volunteer centers specialize in matching you with projects that are interesting to you, and can best utilize your skills and talents.
Here are some links to your local volunteer center:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
Typically, volunteer centers can find projects and programs that are in need of immediate help. Through my volunteer center, I run a tutoring program at one of the local libraries, work at the food bank and children's shelter, and run a teen program at the local museum.
Good luck!
