Scotland is a deceptively large country and your question is too general to be properly answered.

To answer it properly, we need to know just where are you going

If you are staying close to the five cities (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness), then you will have no problem. Likewise the coastal resorts of Ayrshire, the Clyde, the Lothians, Fife and Angus should present no difficulties. Large inland towns such as Dumfries, Perth, Stirling, Kilmarnock, Pitlochry or Aviemore are reasonably well supplied with B&Bs.

BUT, if you go to (and I hope you do) any of the islands, north of the Great Glen, rural Argyllshire, highland Perthshire and parts of the Borders, then you ought to pre-book.

Enjoy your stay with us.

At this time of year you should be OK to just call in on spec.
However, at Easter it will be totally manic and I would strongly advise you to pre-book or you could end up sleeping in your car! The same applies through the Summer season which runs from end May/beginning June through to end of September.
Having said that, if there are games or football on such as World Cup etc., you should be fine as most sad people stay at home to watch the sport on TV. Anyone would think that we don't have TV up here in Scotland!!

Do not listen to amri,There are hostels and b&bs everywhere as well as hundreds of campsites.obviously citys like glasgow or edinburgh u have hotels from cheap all the way up to hiltons, marriots etc.obviously if you are in remote places in the middle of nowhere then you will not find anywhere. There is a pre designed walking route from glasgow all the way to fort william called the west highland way which is worth looking along.as for ireland, its not as interesting or as exciting, why would you go there when you can be in scotland??you should always pre book anywhere though if possible

each and every thing is extra fee-effective once you get there. yet once you have the time take the prepare. The scenary is astounding and nicely worth it. Plus it provides time to mingle with the locals. in case you bypass to Sapa interior the north do no longer sign in for a excursion in the previous hand in Hanoi. they're all rip offs and you will possibly be able to get them for a million/2 the fee as quickly as you arise to Sapa (prepare and bus). Taking the bus is often extra fee-effective yet no longer so comfortable. i might stay away from it in case you could. you will by no ability have a topic looking a critical place to stay in case you do no longer concepts guesthouses. they might desire to basically fee approximately 10-3 money a night. only make certain you bargin on the fee of your room and request to work out it first. you will constantly get a coupon. in the event that they do no longer provide you one then go away. possibly e book your first 2 nights in an excellent place and then swich to a guesthouse. those people will attempt their toughest to tear you off so so which you could be very careful! you could digital mail me in case you have extra questions.

there are lots of B&Bs, I had no problem finding them when I was there. Just stop at the local tourist information office (with the blue "I") and they can help. Even in the smaller cities and towns like Fort William and Inverness it was easy to find one.

the only place that might be difficult is Edinburgh around the time of the tattoo. its a big thing for tourists.

Depends on where & when you're going. Peak holiday times obviously are the busiest, but there are so many B&B places, you should be ok. Check on-line and do some research.

i suggest you prebook as its a misconception there are lots of hotels and b&b's...in fact there are only 9 in total....i suggest you maybe stay somewhere nearby perhaps ireland...and you can just pop over during the day....happy travels...
do not listen to martinf4...he is only building your hopes up for a very hard fall..as there are only 2 hotels in glasgow...2 in edinburgh and 5 scattered over the rest of the country...

em, slightly vague question, it all depends where you go!

if you are out in the middle of nowhere or on an island like where i live and you're coming in the middle of summer, then it would be advisable to book.

but if you're in glasgow or edinburgh or somewhere then there are hundreds of hotels and b & b's
