You need to do some jaw exercises to regain full function of your mouth and get the blood flowing in those muscles again. Take a moist hot towel (heat a damp one in the microwave) place it on both jaws, then open and close a little wider each time. This will be easier as you do it and the pain should subside gradually, but you should feel some instant relief. Keep doing the warm salt water rinses and swish vigorously now. Your clot has formed and you won't be able to dislodge it by swishing. If your pain or swelling worsens, you should see your dentist. The exercises with heat is what we always recommend to our patients. Continue with any antibiotics and anti inflammatory that the dentist prescribed. Hope I've been of some help and good luck.

If it were dry socket you would be in excruciating pain, even with pain medication. A dry socket is uncovered bone where the clot broke loose. If you have sutures placed, more than likely you don't have one.
Cold or ice is only used during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling, after that it's heat.

I had all four taken out during spring break once. The worst part about the recovery was the antibiotics making me nauseous all the time. Only the first few nights involved groaning in pain and swelling, at least for me and several other people I know. I think five days is more than enough to heal if you follow the recovery instructions to a T. Good luck on the surgery and have fun in Mexico!

The stiches that the they use to close the holes of where your teeh were might be one of the causes of pain and preventing you from opening your mouth all the way. I would put a cold pack on your cheeks to help the swelling go down and take come asprin for the pain and to help decrease swelling. Your going to feel pian for a few more weeks. I would use Proyxol which is a oral debris mouth wash that might help heal back there. I had them taken out last fall and was on a oatmeal diet for breakfast for half a month. I just ate soft foods for a while. I took it easy until they healed. You just have to wait until they heal up on their own.

sounds like you may have dry socket or an infection. You may want to call the dentist. See if gargling with warm salt water helps, and get some Ambesol, it helps curb the pain a lot, it numbs the gums, but watch getting it on your tongue.
Ibuprofen is also good, but do not take over 800mg or 4 tablets at a time. Anything over 2 200mg tablets may put you too sleep. Over 800mg may stop your breathing if you are under 150lbs. Talk to doctor or dentist first.

It's normal to still be sore on day 5, but not unbearable pain. Are you taking any medicine for the pain? It's normal for your jaw to be stiff, but I would be more concerned about the pain you're experiencing. "Soreness" is normal, but not excruciating pain. I'd call the doctor who did your extractions and describe the pain to them, as well as any swelling you may still have. Good luck!!

Dry Sockets! Very painful...you need to go back to your oral surgeon ASAP. It will not go away on it's own.

go back to the oral surgeon. do you have pain meds? there is probably something stronger he can give you. it could be an infection.
