Personal selling can be effective when you know how to do it properly. It is an art that needs mastering. Of course, the very advantage of personal selling is selling direct to your customers and you have full control on the entire "selling phase performance". However, in order to get the purchasing decision of a buyer, you should maintain to be credible, convincing, and most of all speaks mostly of "what is in it for me when I buy that product?".

I had visited three locations offering the same product. The product would have required working with the company chosen for a period of time. Location one- had knowledge but seemed disinterested in my specifics, just the sale. Out. Location two was very nice but had no clue- also out. Location three was both knowledgeable, personable and seemed to care about my goals and objectives as well as working with me until I was trained on the product for my business. This was a 5000 purchase, and so I made it with location three. Now ask the next important question- how about follow through with promises, verbal and in writing after the sale? !

This may not be the "type" of answer you are looking for but ...
When my wife wanted a new car. She sold me on it. She may not have profited in the usual sense of the word but the tactics were the same.
She used guilt like a champ. "We need the bigger car because of the kids, it's safer, we can pack more of their crap in the trunk, yadda, yadda, yadda"
