People start smoking marijuana at many different ages. A key factor in what age you start is who you happen to know, i.e.- family, friends, neighbors, etc., that regularly uses it.
I advocate the use of marijuana for many purposes, but believe it should be regulated just as alcohol currently is.
I began using marijuana when I was about 16 years old, but I knew of many people who were using it long before me. One of my friends, who is my age, had an older brother who introduced it to him at a much earlier age. I believe that because of this, his grades slipped throughout his school years. You wouldn't want your child taking shots of tequila before going to class (or at all, for that matter), and you also don't want your child taking bong hits before class for the same reason.
Ages can and will vary depending on many circumstances. You should educate your child about why he shouldn't do it, especially because it's still illegal, but don't give him the assumption that if he ever does decide to use it, he'll be nothing but a worthless drug addict. Or, if you do want to use this method, make sure that he knows that if he ever has a beer, he'll be a worthless alcoholic.
Warn your child about the dangerous drugs. Such as cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin, PCP, barbiturates, NICOTINE... these are all highly addictive, and most will probably eventually kill you. Educate your child about the dangers of any drug, but don't hold extreme bias against pot, because it will just make your child want to try it even more.
I'm an active marijuana advocate. I'm also a successful business owner, and the father of a bright and wonderful toddler. It didn't ruin my life, like some may be quick to claim that it will, and I expect that it will one day soon become decriminalized, eventually legalized (and regulated) all together. When my child is old enough to understand, I'll warn him about all drugs, marijuana included. I won't harp on him and shove only "the dangers" of pot use in his face, because, aside from not being good for your lungs (like cigarettes), marijuana is no more dangerous than cough syrup. Cocaine almost ruined my life several years ago. I'll be sure to warn my child of the dangers of this drug, and other hardcore substances, that I have seen ruin the lives of good people.
*Also, marijuana IS NOT a "gateway" drug. Your child's decision to try hard drugs (or to stay away from them) will depend solely on his or her free-will, along with guidance from you, the parent.*
Side effects may include; drowsiness or possibly hyperactivity, possible speech impairments (not slurred words, but simply not being coordinated enough to finish a complete sentence), "red-eye", dry mouth, possibly an insatiable hunger (the "munchies"), general disorientation if taken in large amounts - or if the person isn't accustomed to the effects, and eventually, a good nap.
The effects wear off after a couple of hours, but can sometimes linger for a few hours after the "high" wears off. The person is fully cognizant again, and there are no lasting effects to a persons personality or brain chemistry. Some people assume it's psychologically damaging, but that's usually because the subjects participating in the studies were stoned out of their minds and rendered incoherent for the duration of the experiment.

I tried it when I was 14.. because of the people around me. and also curious too. wanted to see what it do.. turns out all it does is makes a person quit stupid and extremely boring..lol... really... results are watching movies, lying around, thinking things are funny... it also helps you to STOP THINKING.. its a downer... Some claim it makes a person creative... no truly your best work does not come when you high... you just need to be in a creative mood.
The side effects can harm you long term... for example having children... its been along while since I have looked up what it does to you years down the road... its something worth looking into before getting too involved with it.

People usually first try it in their teens (high school or college). They have a friend who does it (all my friends do, but I've never done it) and that makes it easier to try it. Not because of peer pressure or anything, but because of a curiosity thing, I guess.
