Good question, one which can only be truly answered by Mr Blair and his cronies.
I personally think it's because the americans need help in controlling the country until the oil situation can be resolved.

There is a power struggle for control of the country, and George Bush wants to ensure that he has influence on that. Iraq is a kingpin country in controlling middle eastern oil reserves.
He is also there under the guise of security - to prevent civil war and to police the streets. This is a bonfide objective but we would be foolish to think there are no self-serving reasons.

To help the new government take hold. We cannot just walk away. Even the USA had foreign countries helping us until we were strong enough. I hate to say it but if it wasn't for the French we would have lost the revolutionary war or at the very least have it drag on for many more years.
