At that age, a time-out or take away a favorite toy/take away computer games/tv for a while, then explain again WHY you did that and what he can do to avoid the punishment.

Every child is different. If I use a stern look with one of my kids he will cry. The other child could care less if she is put in the corner. We made a chart with a list of things we do or do not want them to do. Every evening we review the chart and give star stickers. We ask them how they think they did and then we tell them what we think. If they get a certain number of stickers they get a nightly treat. We alternate treats that they like (tv show, extra book, cookie, etc.) If they did not get their treat we discuss what went wrong and say that maybe tomorrow will be a better day. We had tears the first few times they did not get their treat, but now they understand. Now we have many more good days than bad days.

I have a 3 year old boy and a 4 year old girl and the most effective thing that we have found is putting their noses to the wall. In time out they can look around and make faces and play with anything they can reach. With their nose to the wall they cannot do any of these things. Put it there for a minute for every year he is old so since he is 4 he has to put his nose on the wall for 4 minutes. The first couple times you may have to stand behind him and keep reminding him that his nose has to be to the wall but after that he will really get it. They hate to have to put their noses to the wall. The naughty spot and time out are effective sometimes too but the wall really works and has for several months. After he gets off the wall sit him down and talk to him about why he had to put his nose on the wall and how to prevent it in the future. He really is smart enough to do this. Let him know most of all that you love and care about him. Good luck!!

discipline for a child...that is a touchy subject .....ha-ha-ha
i for myself would first try to explain why the deed was wrong
the second time i would probably slap a hand and then re-explain the...by the third time i would say it was done on purpose and an ***-busting is in order...this must also be quelled if the child has a form of developmental defect or is a slow learner or is a child that is just seeking to have total attention for itself alone....then...some time in a room with a closed door would be true murder

That is an easy one! Time out corner for one minute of their age! I have found this is the best solution at this age and with little repetition they get the hang of the rules.

A spanking at that age will work wonders, and make later punishments rare or even unnecessary.
Much more memorable than a talking to, which is just an annoying waste of time (and mostly fruitless) for both parent and child.
Bears are smarter than American parents in that regard, if their cub doesn't mind their elders, a cuff across the snout will follow.

If you don't believe in spanking, then time-out, or alone time, would be good. 4-year olds have alot of energy and surpressing it would be punishment enough and the time to think would help prevent future occurences.

IF HE HAS THAT MUCH ENERGY, MAKE HIM RUN UNTIL HE GETS REALLY TIRED. MAYBE 10MIN OR SO IT DEPENDS HOW UPSET YOU ARE. DONT GIVE HIM ANY SWEETS, GIVE HIM TOUGH LOVE JUST FOR A LITTLE WHILE. PUT RED,YELLOW,GREEN CARDS IN THE HOUSE SO HE CAN FOLLOW AND UNDERSTAND HIS BEHAVIOR AND CONTROLL IT, WELL IT WILL HELP YOU TO CONTROL IT AS WELL. BOYS ARE GREAT TO HAVE
