There is a dog next door to my family and keeps waking my 16 month old baby boy up at 5 or 6 in the morning, when he usually sleeps in until 9 or 10. I havent gone and talked to them yet, I'm very shy and never know how to handle these situations so how can I ask them to shut there dog up nicely, or is there any legal action I can take if I do talk to them and they dont comply?

You can go over and be nice about it. If they want to disregard your request remind them of disturbing the peace laws.

I was fostering a couple of dogs that were loud in the morning. I didn't know it because I was letting the dogs out and getting in the shower and then letting them back in when I got ready. I no longer do that now. Just for simple respect for my neighbors but I didn't know it was happening till the two that were real bad and mouthy were out there.

Well it sucks when other people dont have the courtesy to police their dogs barking habits... I myself now have three dogs and they are never left to bark, I still asked my neighbours if they were barking when I was gone or anything to make sure they werent disturbing people. They werent of course but I like to be polite and make sure of that kind of thing.. however I do know how hard it can be to stop a dog from barking all of the time... somedays when I get up and let my dogs out in the morning they bark at first cause they are happy but they know the be quiet command so it isnt a problem.. I dont let them carry on for hours but I do occasionally go outside during the day in the afternoon and play with them and it can get pretty noisy.. I have noticed though thta I am one of the only dog owners in this neighbourhood to control my dogs barking.. all around I hear dogs barking and barking all day long and their owners seem to ignore it.. I have dogs and even I get annoyed, but I am not shy about it. If it goes on for too long I just open the door and scream at the dog to shutup myself or something like shut your dog up!! i have tried talking but most of the time I dont know whos dog it is!! If I were you, since you know who the people are I would go and tell them point blank in a polite way that the dog is barking and disrupting your life and ask them to please do something about it. If they dont then if you can I would either shut them up yourself (a cold shower with a garden hose works pretty well) or call in a noise complaint. Dont be shy, because you know what? if you are it will never get resolved.. the squeaky wheel gets the grease evey time. Squeak a little and you will get your grease... figuratively speaking.

We have the same exact thing going on in my neighborhood. I called the city (usually your city has a central # for civic activities, complaints, etc.). They sent animal control out and had them put literature on the animal owner's door. On the 2nd and 3rd call they fine the animal owner..We also have called the police when they left the dogs out all night and they howled. We had to move out of our master bedroom into a guest bedroom because the barking is so bad. If you are shy, call your city phone number or the police line (they usually have a non emergency #). Where I live they take care of it right away. Also, when you try to handle things yourself, that is what causes fights to start between neighbors. My neighbor ended up leaving Starbuck's gift cards on our and other's front door because there had been so many complaints..I also had to take a sleeping pill and use ear plugs..(It has been that bad!)..It has finally stopped. But again don't be afraid to get the police involved (afterall it is disturbing the peace)..other people have advise but I have been there and I was very sick when this was going on as well..Sleep deprivation, especially to a child can be serious although your situation doesn't sound quite that bad..Good luck to you.

First of all you need to talk to your neighbors. See if you can settle things in a nice way. Some times that doesn't always work. I had neighbors who complain about mine barking and I did all what I could to live in piece with my neighbor. Until one day she complain my dog made her dog pee in the house. Oh Lord I said lol. IF that doesn't work maybe you should fine out what your rights are . Some towns have a non barking law. You didn't say if it was a outside dog or inside dog. If they were any kind of neighbors at all they will work with you. But be nice about it. Maybe take over some cookies and say by the way lol. If talking to them doesn't work you need to see what the law are in you town and go from there.

OHHHHHHHh let me add this .. never never leave a note.. that just feeds the fire.. it is best to talk to them first.

Dogs bark as often as birds chirp. It's just louder. Could you imagine never ever talking? The dog's not stupid; it's just being a dog.

There isn't really any needs to take any legal action just yet. What you need to do is go and talk to them. I understand being shy, but if this is a problem you have with your neighbor's dog, how are they going to know about it if you don't tell them? I'm sure they'll understand. Try talking to them when you see them coming home from work, or when it's around dinner time and you see their lights on.

You could try leaving a nicely worded note in their mailbox or on their front door that asks the family to be aware that their dog has been waking your small child. They may be sleeping through the noise or not realize how loud the dog is.

If that doesn't help, you may need to call Animal Control and just ask AC to talk with the family about the noise.

i agree with Catherine F if you are too shy to aproach them, leave a note in the mail box or somewhere you know they will find it,explain to them nicely the dog barking is disturbing the baby could they please do something about it,you don't want to cause trouble and be one of THOSE neighbors but you would like to have your baby sleep a little longer in the morning as it is causing the baby to be fussy during the day from lack of sleep, try this before you take legal action,if it doesn't work then you can call the proper athorities

Trying to talk to them would be a much better way to approach them. Just try talking with them as a neighbor first (not about the problem) so you can get a feel for how you might think they would react to different situations then you will have an idea as to what to do next. If you get a completely bad feeling after talking with them (not about the problem) as a friendly neighbor then call law enforcement and explain you wish to remain anonymous because you aren't trying to create another problem, you are just trying to resolve one as neighborly as possible. I hope it works out for you and you can have a good relationship with them.

Please don't do anything legally over a dog. Just walk over and tell them the situation and they'll probably understand and make an effort to do something. If they don't then they are very rude then aren't they. Are they taking care of the dog? If not maybe he wants attention or needs food..something. Get up the courage and go dearie. It might help with letting you and your child to sleep in again.

Stupid Owners! Smart dog. Try and call them first, or face to face. If they don't respect the fact you asked nicely- it's a noise violation and can be dealt with through police intervention. Good luck.
