Keeping the back straight is the job of lots of muscles. You have deep muscles which connect to the spine and help to keep it straight these muscles are called erector spinae and consist of iliocostalis, longissimus and spinalis. You then have intermediate muscles which are serratus posterior inferior and serratus posterior superior. Then finally there is a superficial layer of muscles consisting of trapezius, latissimus dorsi, rhomboid major and minor and levator scapulae. The source below has diagrams of these muscles and an explanation of how they work. Search the internet through Yahoo! and you'll find tons of information on the spine!

The Iliocostalis, longissimus, and semispinalis muscles. These form that muscular ridge on either side of the spine.
