Yes, the Maid of Honor's dress is different from the bridesmaids' dresses.

Yes, usually the maid of honor's dress is slightly different than the bridesmaids. Nothing big, but big enough so that people can tell you are the maid of honor. Of course, this isn't a set in stone rule - some people have it made different and some don't. Sometimes, instead of the dress being different they will have the maid of honor's flowers be a bit different than the others, it just all depends on what the bride wants.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I have been to many weddings where all the bridesmaids including the maid of honor have on the exact same dress. It is to the discretion of the bride how she wants everyone to look. She may choose for each bridesmaid to have a different style dress in the same color. Just ask the bride what her intentions are. It's not the dress that makes you the maid of honor, it's the special honor that you are given by the bride and groom.

What does the bride want? You might want to check with her, it is her wedding after all This isn't really an etiquette issue but rather a matter of personal taste. In this case, the brides is the only taste that matters.

There is no rule but if you would like, you could wear something extra just to set you apart. At my nephews wedding, the MOH wore long gloves like the brides, the other bridesmaids were gloveless.

If you do go the different dress route, make sure you select a variation on the same style. You want to look special but not like a member of a different wedding party.

It usually is customary for the maid of honor to have a dress that is slightly different from the bridesmaids. You would want to stay in the same color range, but the style should be somewhat different...or the same dress, but a different shade of the same color....there should be something that makes her stand apart from the others. Or, lets say that all the bridesmaids wear a spring floral print in pastel shades. The maid of honor might wear the same dress, but in the same colors...but deeper shades.

Not necessarily the dress, but sometimes they have a slightly different bouquet or hairpiece/hat. It really depends on the Bride, and also the age, etc. of the Maid of Honor. I was in a wedding once where we all got and wore single strand pearls, but the Maid of Honor had double strand.

By tradition, yes, to distinguish her apart from the bridesmaids, coz she's supposed to be the "best friend" of the bride, and you do know that the maid of honor is entrusted with more tasks than the others, right?

Usually the maid of honor has the same dress as the brides maids.
What makes her unique is she gets to hold the brides flowers during the ceremony. Thats about it.

I would discuss it with the bride since its her wedding she should be the one to choose what each member of the party wears.... she wants her wedding to look a certain way -- I think the maid of honors dress should look a bit different to distinguish her but that's up to the bride.

Some brides like it that way and some don't. It's not a "must."

Sometimes MOH has slightly different dress, or slightly different headpiece, or different flowers or whatever. Or sometimes she's just dressed the same as the bridesmaids. It's whatever the bride wants to do.
