I got my moms computer because my laptop fried, for now. She has Windows 98 and I would like to upgrade it to Windows XP Pro. I have the disc for XP Pro, but the code no longer works, it has been used already I guess. The disc is a Dell Reinstallation CD Microsoft XP Professional Service Pack 2, where would be the best place to buy the product key code? Will it even work if i put it in an IBM hard drive tower?

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

You'd have to call Microsoft and request a new CD key, it is a shot in the dark but they might have sympathy and help you out. When you buy XP you are buying one copy to use on one computer, odds are you are going to have to buy a copy if you want to put it on the laptop. But if you arn't going to use the computer that broke I think you'd be able to get a new one... Good luck.

If your mom's computer has Windows 98 on it, it's probably too old to handle Windows XP. I wouldn't bother.

The first answerer may be incorrect. Just upgrade you RAM and/or processor and WinXP will work fine. you can go to crack.ms for free cracks and serials. WinXP will work on any machine.
