8 years ago i had an abnormal pap smear b/c of HPV. I then had a biopsy done in the doctor's office and the results came back pre-cancerous. My doctor recommended having a LEEP procedure done to remove the "bad cells" on my cervix. Basically, it is a simple procedure done in the hospital. I was awake during the procedure, but was numbed up. The doctor cut a small "cone" shaped piece of my cervix off. It was done in about 2 minutes!! After the LEEP, I was sent home and was ok.....my mom and i even went out to lunch on our way home!!!. After this, i had to have pap smears every 6 months for 2 years just to make sure the cells did not change again. (they didn't!). I am now able to go a full year between pap smears now!

***As an FYI......having the LEEP can pplace you in a higher risk for future miscarriages during pregnancy due to an incompetant cervix. I am currently pregnant and i was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. Fortunately, i told my Obsetrician about my LEEP before i got pregnant, so she monitored my cervix throughout the pregnancy. When i started to dilate in my second trimester, they placed a stitch in my cervix to keep it closed and i have been able to carry my baby to full term......i am now only 1 week away from my due date. I only tell you this b/c the doctor who did my LEEP never told me about this risk, and while i would have still had the procedure done (couldn't get pregnant in the future if i die of cancer while young, right?), i wouldn't have known to tell my current obsetrician about this procedure.

****Also, i know it's scary, but you'd be surprised at how many people you know who have had this kind of a procedure done! I know i was!

Good Luck
