Because you dont go into it saying Man I hope I become an addict. You do it for the pleasure of it the high and the next thing you know your hooked. Doing the drugs is your choice. At first its a mentality that you have to have it to feel good then it becomes physical when your body needs it to function. Thats why I have stayed away from drugs all my life. Okay I have drank on more than a few occasions but only at parties. Peace out....................

U kidding me right?
Sorry! please excuse my initial reaction.
Even though it was so eloquently explained by the many brilliant minds, that have answered you, to me "drug addiction is a choice" in this way: You can CHOOSE not to become "addicted" by not touching the stuff! On the real, though, "addiction" is a "result" of the "action"- "Choice".
Let me throw some synonyms at you for clarity:
ADDICTION: Compulsion, dependance, need, obsession
craving.
CHOICE: Option, selection, picking, choosing.
Two different words with two different meanings and "addiction" happens as a result of the "choice" to do the drugs.
Got it?
In addition to the grammatical clarity, Most negative results are not choices within themselves, but happen because of a negative choice. No one chooses to become an addict under normal circumstances. It is usually a product of some kind of influence, or circumstance.
Got it?

Only the first use of some addictive drug is a choice. After that, the drug itself takes over your mind at some point, and you don't have a choice anymore.
That's why you have to avoid that first use, at all costs. It's like stepping into quicksand. You might nevere escape.

Drug addiction is a choice. Anyone who feels that they cannot control their drug use and that they are a "drug addict" can walk into a clinic and get help.

The choice is to use. Addiction is one of the long term effects or consequences of that choice.

An addiction is an illness no matter how you look at it. They may have done it to themselves, but all addictions are treatable.
