The Civil War/War of Northern Aggression was not about slavery. It was about the rights and powers of individual states versus that of the central government. It was about economics not civil rights.

The south was loosing the war before the battle at Gettysburg. Loosing that particular battle just moved things along faster. Once the armies of the confederacy were defeated, centralized government was able to make radical changes to the laws of the southern states - one of which was the emancipation proclamation.

the battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln & the procolamation of abolishition of slavery was strategy not human rights. Without slave labor the south would be crippled economically. Who was going to tend the crops and run the weapons factories? It totally disabled the prosperous economy the south had. The battle of gettysburg was signifigant because this was a turning point in the war for the north. Up to that point the south was leading the charge and had made it all the way up to pennsylvania.

Well it was the turning point battle of the entire war, right? So since the war was at least partially about slavery and it's abolition, a battle that was this crucial would have a direct effect on the goals of the war, don't you think?

From my understanding, it was a battle between people who on one side wanted the State Government to have the power, which was the way it was before the war. And on the other side, Lincolns states who faught for a stronger Federal Government who would have more power over the State one. Hence, The Federal Government (Big Brother) has more power over the State (LIttle Brother) today.

It was the northernmost excursion of the Confederacy, and a big strategic defeat. It indicated that they could be defeated in total, which was a necessary precondition for abolishing slavery within their territories.
