i think you should tell him in private that way if he does like you or does not like you then others would not find out about you liking him it will save you the embarrassment trust me but when you tell him make sure that he promises or something that he won't tell anyone unless you don't really care if others find out

we are all scared at times, him also, just approach him and say hello and ask him how he is doing. bring up the last ball game, say hey that was a really good game, or if they lost, say sorry that we lost the game, but you'll get next time...good luck...
