I used to naturally sleep 8 hours a night. So if I went to bed at midnight I knew I would wake up at 8 am. Well for the past few months I have been sleeping longer and longer. Now my body naturally wants to sleep 12 hours a night. I went to bed at 11:00pm last night and woke up at 11:00 am. And if I set my alarm to wake me up earlier I feel tired all day. Does anyone know why this would happen, and how I can change it? I don't want to sleep half my day away.

Its natural to sleep longer during the winter months, our bodies actually NEED more sleep then. But perhaps try making your sleep environment as comfortable as possible - think about the ideal lighting, temperature, noise level for you for sleeping, this should help you sleep more soundly. And go to bed and get up every morning at the same time, so your body's on a regular schedule, that should help too. If you're still having problems, maybe try exercising in the morning.

There are physical and psycological reasons for needing more sleep.
How is your sleep, to begin with? Are you waking up several times during the night - or are you sleeping through without inturruption?
Changes in your thyroid could cause sleep disruption, and depression could cause insomnia (waking in the middle of the night) and therefore make you sleep longer in the morning.
The best thing is to make your sleep habits regular. Go to bed at the same time every night, including weekends. And get up the same time every morning. This should get you back to your 8 hour schedule.
