Retainers are better than nothing and quartz retainers are good quality and you can usually find micro retainers so they'll be less noticeable. But the point of a retainer is just to make it less noticeable, not invisible.

While it won't close up fully in 8 hours, it can be hard to get jewelry back in by the end of the day and the last thing you need to be doing is forcing the jewelry in. If you won't/can't wear a retainer, you might have to decide which is more important.

It will shrink and possibly close if you take it out now. Your best bet is to get a retainer. They can be cut to the right size if you need to. They're not invisible, but most arent obvious unless you're looking for it.

Try your local studio, most will have retainers for sale or can order one for you if you need it. They're usually around $10

It may look a bit funny, but you can put a very small stud in there and then put a band-aid over it. It will end up looking like you are trying to hide a zit, but it will work. There is no way you can leave it out w/o it closing.
