If you drink large quantities of water and fail to let it out, you can get water intoxication which can be fatal.
As long as you are releasing water through urination and sweating you can pretty much drink as much as you want.

How much is a lot? The condition polydipsia (excessive fluid intake or constant thirst) can be extremely dangerous. The reason for this is that the electrolytes your body needs (magnesium, sodium, potassium, etc.) can become scarce and this can be fatal. It is very, very serious. But I would really be interested to know exactly how much water you drink in one hour and in one 24-hr. period. Also if there is any physical reason why you may feel the urge to drink so many fluids. Excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes, for example. So those are the concerns I have at the moment.

It can be dangerous to drink large amounts of water. Recently not far from the city I live in. A radio show had a contest to see who could drink the most water without using the restroom. A lady that was participating in the contest died a couple hours after the contest. She died of water intoxication. Very sad! So don't drink it excessively.

Jeez, I can tell you don't read the newspaper. People DIE from being over hydrated, and the symptoms are like DEHYDRATION. There is such a thing my dear. Get a grip on your oral fixation. Anything over one gallon of water a day is too much. You need to drink 2 glasses of skim milk a day, are you doing that? Do you take vitamins? You can flush out too many nutrients by over hydrating, too. I would take vitamins & minerals, be sure to eat properly, and get regular exercise. I wonder what a bone density test would show, bet you have the bones of a much older person, too.

It would depend on several things, but to make it quick, yes, too much water can over tax your kidneys. How much is too much? well, 80 oz. a day should be plenty. Especially if you are eating alot of fresh fruits & veggies, eating soups, and drinking other liquids. However, if you drink coffee, or alcohol, MORE water is needed due to thier dehydrating properties. (consider an extra cup of water per serving of these)
I hope this helps!
Cheers!

Some people say that too much is a bad thing with anything, actually your body is ovr 90 percent water... when you move, chew, sweat or urinate, or even cry, a bowel movement you lose water... too much water ALL AT ONCE is not recommended but several glasses of water a day cant hurt you, it prevents dehydration, if your urine is bright yellow or dark, and has a smell to it, you need water...water doesnt hurt you if your active, but over hydration and water intoxication can occur if you guzzl large amounts in one sitting.it keeps you full, it boosts metabolism because your body has to burn it all off...essentially its good for you, but like anything else to INCLUDE milk... too much is bad for you...

Hi Denise,

to actually harm your body you must drink and enormous amount of water. Water IS good for you, it speeds up your metabolism and flushes the kidneys (which is good for your kidneys). You should drink 8 - 10 8 oz glasses of water a day
