I have recently began dating my high school boyfriend (we are both divorced) after 25 years of being apart. He's a great guy but unfortunately has put on weight (a lot !) since then, whereas I have only gained about 10 pounds. I hate to sound shallow, but I think most of us would admit that you must approve of your partners physical appearace, to a certain degree, in order to be happy. I think we could make a go of it if he would lose about 50 pounds. Should I try to encourage him in this effort, or just walk away if I can't fully accept him just the way he is?

Attraction is very important in a relationship so u have every right to be a little shallow. 50 pounds is a lot. It would take him a very long time and a lot of commitment to lose all that weight. If your patient enough you can wait around and work through it with him. Is it really worth it though?

"just walk away if I can't fully accept him just the way he is" is the correct answer. You can't change someone nor expect them to change to be like you want.

Frankly, if he lost 50 lbs you'd find something else to be upset about, so do you both a favor and let it go...

you should ask him to workout or join you for a run.. if nothing works out then maybe its best to walk away..
