I need specifics, if you can include website for any information provided would help also.

Basically whats the best way to go for this, my friend has a 4 year old son, its in the court order that he buys a 2 way radio to keep in contact.

He lives in downtown L.A. and his son lives in another part of the city.

What would be a good 2 way radio to buy? Also I know some phone companies offer something call push talk I think but isn't that too complicated for a 4 year old to use?

I was thinking it would be more feasible to get a phone with the the walkie talkie feature but my concern is that it would be complicated and more expensive.

If you could give insight on this that would be great.

I'm thinking something with a range of 15 to 25 miles but I haven't found a good site that offers this and when I do, the people say they only get about 3 miles tops!

so I think I know it would probably be easier to get a push talk phone due to the distance of his child.

Basically he will have to pay a fee every month for this and it probably is more reliable.

The push to talk (P2T) is the same as the walkie talkie you mention. It is simple and reliable. You just push the button on the phone just like you would push the button on a 2-way radio. They have good coverage in most places. Maybe you can even get the P2T on a kids cell phone. A kids cell phone are simple and are limited to predetermined numbers for safety. For a 2-way radio you would have to use a radio service from a 2-way dealer to get any range. The link below is a start.

Best bet is a phone with a 2 way radio feature. They aren't too complicated.

GMRS allows repeaters; but repeater enabled equipment is costly $200-$300 per radio plus a license fee. Then finding a repeater that is open to the public can be difficult to impossible in some areas.

Most other radios you find won't get you very far... a mile or two tops.
