I hear people say things like " The Truth of Jesus Christ " and stuff like that all the time. But is it the Truth? Do they know it because they feel it? Do they feel it because they know it?

I tend to use the word Truth differantly.

I can have Faith that my car will get me to work today.
I can Believe that my car will get me to work today.
I will not KNOW that my car will get me to work today until it actually gets me to work.

And thats the Truth.

The word truth is used in most cases to deny people the chance to argue against something. By using the term "truth" you actually say "no discussion allowed, no other opinion allowed, shut up."

This is an interesting question. The word "Truth" is slowly evolving to mean scientific and empirical truth. As this progresses the truth claims of religion will become increasingly untenable and will have to be redefined as mythology.

This will take a while but it's happening. Scientific truths are the only ones that can be recognized by everyone (well, not everyone as we see here daily). People can rage as much as they want but short of a huge catastrophe it will happen.

In 200 years or so...

I sometimes use the capitalized word Truth to mean ultimate reality - but I don't claim to know exactly the nature of that. So when I say "Truth" I'm not actually claiming to know what it is, and I don't say that a certain religious proposition is the Truth. I think that our religious theories are models of approaching the Truth, but are not necessarily the Truth themselves.

Grasshopper.., pick up the stone. Feel the stone. What do you feel? You feel a rock. Its it truth or opinion? GRASSHOPPER! SPIT THAT ROCK OUT OF YOUR MOUTH NOW!!!! Just hold the thing - geesh!

Now.., is it a rock or stone because I said it is? Or is it something else? Stop picking your nose and listen, or I'll have you lifting that burning hot kettle with your forearms again!

If it is true - then you must tell me it is true. I say it is a stone, and you say it is piece of cotton candy.

AHEM - okay.., all kidding around aside.., if one believes the Truth is in Jesus Christ, so be it. Did it kill you to hear that? Is it really so like battery acid you cant stand for someone else to have believes apart from your own?

If it is believed to be truth - then who are you to say otherwise. You have no valid proof otherwise. If I pick up a rock and tell you its a hammer and you don't believe me.., and I slug you up the side of the head with it.., the truth remains.., my rock has become a hammer in my hand. My hammer is the truth.

Religious truths are not like the proofs of scientific rationalism, but more like the intuitive insights of poetry or music or art.

Could Atheist stop using there is no God as truth, and instead use "my opinion", wait, if you're already an atheist, doesn't that made that statement cling to you by default? Meh, I don't know. Anyways stop answering theist question if you're an atheist :P

I think people should practice properly spelling elementary vocabulary words like, "their", and "differently" before going public with them. And THAT'S the truth.
