I will say that they generally start when I get home and I give them a greeting and it always starts after I say, "My darlings". The one I say it to first starts then the others join in.

Some words trigger dogs for some reasons. My dogs go crazy if I say Hello loud. Like if I can't here someone on the phone. Dogs can also hear thing we can't. They can hear things like airplanes before we can. Also dogs are especially excited when their owner gets home. Try ignoreing them until they are calmed down. I know it might be hard, but it works good.
Good Luck!

Howling is a dog's way to communicate to distant pack members. Dogs will sometimes try to communicate to far-off pack members, regardless of a stimulus like a siren or another dog howling...

howling is the dog's way of communicating to other dogs, so what your first dog is probabling doing is calling the others to let them know that their master has arrived. Some dogs bark in joy, some howl. They probably consider you as one of their pack leader, hehe (joke).

Maybe they are howling as a sign of greeting. You are the boss, the alpha dog. They are saluting you.

A dogs sense of hearing is far more acute than ours and they hear things that are not audible to us. It could be sirens in the distance, a train or they could be responding to other dogs howling.

I love to listen to mine when they start their song. I want to tape it and play it back to them to see what they do to the sound of themselves howling.

If they are like my beagles, they will howl because they happened to hear a fly passing by the neighbor's grill and feel they need to properly defend the grill.

Or....maybe mine are just insane.....thats more likely anyway :)

Sounds like you're the one starting them up. Try ignoring them when you come home one day and see if this changes their response. Then you'll have your answer.

Um, there is a sound setting them off...you! Your dogs are greeting you.

well the one who starts first is obviously the alfa male (or dog if its a female). watch the discovery channel when they talking about wloves(dogs closest canine relations) its very informative. plus dogs have emotions also maybe they telling you hi first cause they want something or they might just have missed you if you got it like that
