I'm a teacher and a volunteer fire fighter. I do a lot fire safety presentations for primary age children.
Here's the way I do it.
1. Show them a short fire safety film (keep it short or you'll lose them). If you don't have a film, you may be able to track one down through your insurance company.
2. Bring in a fire fighter to talk to the children to talk about basic fire safety
3. Ask the fire fighter to put on his entire "structure" uniform. This includes an SCBA (self-contained breathing aparatus). This shows the children what a firefighter looks like with all the equipment on. If a child doesn't know what to expect, a firefighter can look scarey.
4. Teach the children the "stop, drop, cover your face and roll" technique. Make every child practice this and prove they are capable of doing it. I always give them a little fire helmet or coloring book when they show me they can do it.

These are things that every child should know. We discuss things like smoke detectors, getting out of the house, having a meeting place (outside, away from the fire)the entire family knows about in the event of a fire.
It's so important that they see the firefighter in full uniform. Every year children die in fires because they hide when they're scared. The firefighter with the mask may scare them even more but if they can talk to one with a mask and helmet on, it shows them it's ok to go with them. I even encourage the children to try on the firefighters hats, coats, etc.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

I work for the local ambulance service, and my husband is a fire fighter. We are always happy to visit schools, preschools and community groups.
You can get a tour and good safety education.
Most police/sheriff departments have an officer that works with the local schools that would probably be willing to visit with your kids.

My nephew, 4, accidentally set the curtains on fire and wound up burning the house almost completely down. No one was hurt but I know his biggest heroes are firefighters.
