Use whatever means (ferry, bus, etc.) to get to the former World Trade Center site. At the WTC go to the PATH train station. There will be a train that goes directly to Exchange Place (it should be marked Journal Square/Newark or Hoboken). It is the first stop, about 3 to 5 minutes from the WTC. It's very quick. Much quicker than going all the way up to 34th Street.

There was talk recently of having a bus leaving from Staten Island and going through Bayonne, NJ to go thru the Holland Tunnel. However, I think the MTA had a problem with that since it ran through New Jersey, even though it would have been faster than going thru B'klyn.

The Goethals Bridge is way out of the way!

Probably the fastest way would be the SI ferry to lower Manhattan. From there get the PATH train to exchange place.

It sounds time consuming, but your alternate method (using public transportation) would be the BUS and traffic can be a disaster and you'll be stuck in it every day.

Use mapquest to map your route. I think the Goethals bridge might be your best bet.
