Many people do not understand what the physiology of declawing a cat is all about. Not only does this remove their claws, it messes them up in the head for future litter box use and kind of makes them a bit crazy (at least some of them). I had two cats that were declawed by my mom when I was younger. Both has serious mental issues after the fact and one never would go poop in her litter box after that (wouldn't dig).

Oh, and Childhood Friend... they actually defend themselves VERY well even without the front claws... all the damage in a cat fight is done with the back paws. Think of how the grab with the front and rip into your hand or arm with those back ones... very nasty gashes indeed. And they can climb trees too - I've seen it often enough. It's really more of a mental thing... they are sort of mentally imprinted that their toes hurt when they dig in the litter box and stuff and then they don't want to and then they don't know where to go, etc.... it's mental torture more than physical.

I think a lot of Vets are moving away from this practice and suggesting alternative.

I have two four year old male cats that love to mark everything (part of the scratching mentality) and they were put on those cardboard box scratchers by the original owners of the momma right off the bat. They both scratch only on those boxes now. It's wonderful. I also have a 13 year old female that has destroyed my couch and sitting chair... I see the difference those scratching boxes can make first hand!!

Basically, I think it's two things: lack of education on the part of pet owners that don't realize what is really going on when they do this AND pet owners who are lazy.

I wouldn't say it's cruel per se... I would say that it's not the best thing to do. Cruel is setting a cat on fire and taking pleasure in it. And sadly, there are those people out there too.

I think its very cruel and i believe that in the UK you would have great difficulty in finding a vet who would do it if it is not already illegal.
I assume that they de-claw them to stop them scratching the furniture.
My cat has ruined a lot of my furniture but i would never consider having him de-clawed.

De clawing your cat is a cruel act. A cat is a wild creature that needs its claws to survive in the outside world its unfair to take that away from them. Even if the cats live indoor it shouldnt be practiced, my cat scratches furniture and me but i wouldnt wanna change that as its her nature. Its like clipping a bird wings, its cruel a bird should be able to fly not be forced not too. My parents have a bet parrot and he is allowed to fly around the house and pretty much do whatever he wants to do, they would never get his wings clipped.

I don't think it's cruel at all, but only do it if necessary. We had to declaw one of our cats because of CONSTANT ripping and tearing of carpet and furniture. Because we were renting, it was our only option if we wanted to keep him. We had it done and he was the same as he ever was. No change in behavior. However, if you have an indoor/outdoor cat you cannot take the claws out if you wish to see your cat again.

My uncle has had it done to his cats too and they were just as normal as before. I have no problem with it, but people who have it done because they anticipate a problem are in the wrong.

i don't think its cruel because your not de clawing the whole cat only the front paws, not the back paws and the cat doesn't feel a thing when the surgery is performed they are put to sleep and some zoos even have de claw their big cats. it doesn't affect the cats life the cat wont hate you because you had its claws removed. and the litter box thing my cat never had a problem using the litter box after he was de clawed he pooped and covered it all the time and he never had a problem defending himself and never had any mental issues

Yes, it's cruel. People do it so their furniture doesn't get torn up but if the cat gets out of the house they have no way of defending themselves or even climbing a tree. Do not recommend.

Didn't they do that to the cat in the Whiskas advert years ago -so that he'd paw the cat food out of the tin? Could be wrong, but I remember being horrified when someone told me (whatever it was).
